What the hell? Is there an RSS reader alternative that functions as well?

I understand, but am disappointed by the logic. It simply doesn't have enough users, even though the users it has are quite passionate about it. I also wonder how many things use it as a backend and will break when they shut it down.

This is much more depressing than the iGoogle shutdown that will happen in November.

Its almost like a huge number of people stopped using it when they crippled the sharing and comment features to make you use g+?

I wouldn't know I don't think I've ever used the sharing or comment features. It is simply a great cloud based RSS reader to me. Sycronizing across different devices and webbrowsers is the killer feature for me.

Feedly is at about 75%, so I guess it gets a passing grade of C until I find something better.

Oh. Apparently "July" means "remove it from the 'More' menu now"..... so unless you know what the URL is, its gone.

Okay, Google has taught me that I should never trust that I can always rely on their services. I'll keep that in mind whenever I need a service that Google happens to offer (until they decide not to).

Godammit. The problem is, I think, that Reader ended up becoming an unseen backend for many other apps, so many of the people using it didn't see enough of its face.

I still would have thought that it pulled its weight at Google just because of the amount of data it harvested.

I guess the Google Reader fans feel the same way as I do when Apple removed the RSS support from Safari. My conspiracy theory is that Twitter and Facebook made sabotaging RSS a condition of their cooperation when Apple added the social media features into OS 10.8.

Yeah sure, it'll do no good, but it makes a statement all the same. :)

A tech podcast I listen to noted that Microsoft messenger was shutting down today or tomorrow, no petition to save it.

Yes, but that's because:
1) MSN Messenger sucks
2) MSN Messenger doesn't do anything that there aren't three dozen other products doing better.

Neither of those are true about Google Reader.

And MSN messenger was far further down the path of dying; everyone now uses gChat or Facebook's chat, because they're on one or both of those sites. Not many people are still on Hotmail, and those that are, are the ones who don't use messengers much.
