SQUIRREL BEATS UP LABRADOR
When Carl the labrador chased a squirrel into the woods, his owners' only concern was for his quarry. But they should have worried about their dog. Because seconds later Carl re-emerged with the grey squirrel firmly clamped to his neck. The squirrel launched itself at the dog and sank its teeth and claws into his neck. The attack continued until a passer-by intervened. Carl, who is two, was taken to a vet and needed surgery to stitch up his wounds.

From The Daily Show:

1000 firefighters volunteer to help people in New Orleans - and are instead set up distributing pro-FEMA leaflets to people already out of the danger zone.

EDIT: "as specific orders began arriving to the firefighters in Atlanta, a team of 50 Monday morning quickly was ushered onto a flight headed for Louisiana. The crew's first assignment: to stand beside Bush as he tours devastated areas."

On the topic of FEMA, they did their best to get people to donate money - to Operation Blessing, not the Red Cross. Operation Blessing is Pat Robertson's "charity", whose previous relief efforts include taking money aimed at Rwandan genocide and using it to free oppressed diamonds from Pat Robertson's Rwandan diamond mine, and using funds raised for Liberian peasants to provide relief to Liberian gold from Pat Robertson's Liberian gold mine.

Why cellular phones in Louisiana and Mississippi are down.

Hurricane survivors told to "show us your tits" if they wanted to be rescued - when they refused, they were left behind.

White House press corps kicks the crap out of Scott McClellan.
Q: Your job is to answer the questions.

MR. McCLELLAN: And I have.

Q By saying you won't answer.

Ah, yes, FEMA:

In a memo to Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff, FEMA head Michael Brown proposed sending 1,000 staff within 48 hours and another 2,000 within seven days. The delay was attributed to the need for adequate training.

On the same day, August 29 - the day the hurricane hit land - he urged fire and rescue services outside Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama not to send in emergency workers unless specifically asked for help from local authorities.

He told FEMA staff that one of their duties was to make the agency look good. "Convey a positive image of disaster operations to government officials, community organisations and the general public," he wrote.

Also, the US Navy:

Two navy helicopter pilots, after completing their assigned mission, responded to a Coast Guard SOS, and wound up rescuing 110 people. They've been reprimanded - apparently those choppers were supposed to sit on the ground in Florida, not work in the air over New Orleans.

The mission apparently didn't interfere with supply delivery - especially since they asked for and received permission to continue it, while refueling.

Internal Memos Show Oil Companies Intentionally Limited Refining Capacity to Drive Up Gasoline Prices

Three internal memos from Mobil, Chevron, and Texaco (available at http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/energy/fs/ show different ways the oil giants closed down refining capacity and drove independent refiners out of business. The confidential memos demonstrate a nationwide effort by American Petroleum Institute, the lobbying and research arm of the oil industry, to encourage the major refiners to close their refineries in the mid-1990s in order to raise the price at the pump.
