On the MS store right now (and all weekend), Telltale's Batman is free.
Telltale make great games! Batman sucks but Batman *video games* are consistently fun!
Requires a (free) MS Account, only works on Win10. But free.

From the makers of That Sniper Game I Liked So Much For $10 comes That Sniper Game, But Way More Co-Op And With Zombies. For $10.
Ever thought there should be more planning, more tactical options, and more Nazis than in Left 4 Dead? Well, now there is. It's even got all 8 L4D characters as playable options, although I haven't figured out how to spam PILLS HERE yet.
Solo is moderately satisfying, but there are a BUNCH of places even in the first mission where I'm like "yup, I could REALLY USE SOMEONE TO COVER MY BACK RIGHT NOW". It feels like it's going to be great fun on teams.
Anyway. $10. More action-oriented gameplay than Sniper Elite (WAAAAAAAY less sneaking), but slower and requiring more planning and battlefield management than Left 4 Dead. For $10, this is a good Hallowe'en purchase.

Today in "Valve owns my soul" is a free-to-play weekend of Sniper Elite 3. I've done the first few missions and this game scratches all my "I feel like shooting Nazis" itches. Basically, you wander around northern Africa, shooting Nazis with a rifle or a pistol, and sometimes you set traps and let Nazis blow themselves up, and sometimes you just set something on fire.. No stupid AI teammates (in the first few missions, at least), no giant robot enemies requiring many shots from a rocket launcher (in the first few missions, at least), just some sneaking, some hiding, some tactics, and some Nazis to shoot in their stupid Nazi faces.
Free to play until tomorrow, 80% off (meaning, $11 Canadian) until Monday afternoon, DEFINITELY worth checking out if you like tactical/shooting games. And, hey, if you do get it, there's a co-op mode and I will 100% play some co-op with people who also want to shoot Nazis.

I like video games. I like shooters. My favourite shooters are the combo sneak/shoot/think games, single player, where I don't depend on the AI of teammates, I have options at how I approach the setpieces, and where enemies that you just have to pound on for hours with a rocket launcher to kill are rare to nonexistent.
Steam's got Wolfenstein: The New Order on sale for 75% off for the next two days, and it's basically everything I've wanted from a shooter in years. It's a mix of stealth and blasty gameplay, there's no AI teammates to deal with, the setpieces are fun, the story is entertaining enough in a "Billy Blaskowicz, Nazi Puncher" sense, and the enemies are Nazis. It's a game where the goal is to shoot all the stupid Nazis in their stupid Nazi faces.
$16. And it'll be my first 100% completion game in a while, since going back and digging up achievements is entertaining, non-grindy, and involves shooting stupid Nazis in their stupid Nazi faces and that's way more satisfying than just blocking the stupid Nazis on Twitter. Bonus: There's an early choice that determines certain story elements later, and you can play through both versions and earn different bonuses.... and all your progress towards bonuses is saved and available whichever timeline you're playing. So once you unlock something, it's available in both timelines, it's available if you replay an earlier mission, it's available if you die after earning it before saving, etc etc etc. It's a very non-frustrating way of handling things, and refreshing.
So yeah. Wolfenstein: The New Order. Worth $16, very fun, stupid Nazis get shot in their stupid Nazi faces. (If all this hasn't been clear so far: There's a LOT of violence. Set in Nazi Occupied Earth, your are Violence Solves Everything Main Character, who uses graphic violence to solve the problem of Nazis.)

Oct. 17th, 2014 09:21 amPayday, free on Steam for the next 24 hours. No, not "free to play for a day", a permanent copy, free.
Payday: Not quite as polished as Payday 2, but very fun, *very* different than most other shooters, and did I mentionTOTALLY FREE?
EDIT: Crap! Turns out it was 100% off for 24 hours starting YESTERDAY so now that deal is over. It was only free for, like, 3 more hours after my post. Now it's 90% off, so $1.70.
(Payday 2, 75% off.)

And also you should play Payday because Payday is GREAT, and the first game will also be free if only 75K more people join, and then you are joining the group so that YOU will also get my awesome free stuff.
Candy Coating!
Jun. 27th, 2014 01:41 pmPayday 2 is on 80% off today. So is all the DLC except the most recent heist. Just FYI.
They've got Giancarlo Esposito (yes, from Breaking Bad) doing mission briefings!

Dec. 25th, 2013 04:34 pmLeft 4 Dead 2 is free, until tomorrow at 10am PST (1pm EST, 6pmish Generic Western Yurp Time)
store.steampowered.com appears to currently be crushed by the traffic load, but this is Valve. They'll fix that shortly.

Oct. 18th, 2012 01:44 pmPayday: The Heist, the co-op FPS of doomy doom, complete with Left4Dead crossover level, is $5 again this weekend. Also, free to play until Sunday. And the pretty-nice DLC is $2.50.
It's a very fun game, and levels only take a short time to play - or lose, really, because it's got a fairly steep learning curve and the higher difficulty levels are REALLY hard. Still, it's easy to find groups, the community is overwhelmingly filled with perfectly-reasonable people, and nothing stops you from only playing with your friends. Oh, and there's a Left4Dead crossover level, and who doesn't love crossovers with Left4Dead?

Mar. 30th, 2012 05:05 pmWeekend deal: Trine 2, 50% off. The original Trine is *80%* off, or $2.
Trine is a very pretty sidescroller platforming game where you play three heroes with different skill sets trapped in the same body, and you switch between them to solve different jumping/shooting/climbing/fighting/making boxes with magic puzzles. Unless you hate sidescroller games, the original is well worth $2 and the time to play it. I haven't played Trine 2 yet, but the original was enough fun that I bought the sequel because, hey, $7.50. Why not?
(FYI, don't buy the "Collector's Edition" - it gives a copy of Trine 1 for $5. A copy of Trine 1 is currently $2. So buy Trine 2 and Trine 1 separately, and save $3.)

Steam's gone into sale mode again. Fallout: New Vegas, the best Fallout game yet? $5. All the DLC, which is awesome stuff? Dirt cheap.
Additionally: LA Noire, Mass Effect 1+2, Dragon Age, and Portal 2, all 50% off.
Given the way they do these things, this is probably as cheap as New Vegas and LA Noire are going to get during this sale. It's possible that the others will get a 24-hour 75%+ off sale during the week, and possible they'll just stay this cheap the whole time.

Aug. 17th, 2011 06:54 pmAvadon: The Black Fortress
Old-school RPG, looks like part Ultima VII, part Shining Force, a little Diablo, a whole lot of Final Fantasy.... and the author of the game also wrote The Poo Bomb: True Tales Of Parental Terror, the single best book on parenting ever released, to the point where I got a signed copy for my oldest sister when she first spawned and other, lesser copies for each of my other siblings, because dude, BEST BABY BOOK EVER.

Jul. 10th, 2011 10:46 pmSo, today is the last day of Steam's semi-annual sale.
Today is all repeat deals: Portal 2 for 50% off, Borderlands for 75% off, Fallout New Vegas for 70% off, GTA4 Complete for $10, AssBro As The Kids Are Calling It These Days for 50% off.
The sales will probably be this good again in December. Until then, no, you're NOT going to see these games for this cheap, and they really are excellent games.

Jun. 30th, 2011 03:31 pmSteam's started their annual Canada Day And Other, Lesser Holidays Sale.
Contents, prizes, and cheap video games. Today's deals: Borderlands Game Of The Year 2010 Edition for $7.50, Oblivion Game Of The Year 2007 Edition $7, Medal Of Honor $10, and a pile of others.
Hell, I *own* the original Oblivion and I'm tempted by $8.50 for the complete pack with all the expansions (Anyone want a used copy on DVD?). It's a GREAT game. And Borderlands is one of the best games made in *years*.0
(Also: At $1.50 per copy, or four copies for $4.50, Lead And Gold looks like it could be fun. It's multiplayer-only, though. Anyone think that's worth taking a shot at?)

One of the best games[1] ever made is Star Control 2.
I have an original copy, on both 3.5" and 5.25" floppy disks. I keep it in my office, next to my desk. In my COLLECTION of the classics, which includes[2] Pools Of Darkness, a first edition of The Man With The Golden Gun, Sam And Max Hit The Road, Machiavelli's "Discourses on Titus Livy", the original X-Com, Knuth's "The Art Of Computer Programming", and Sim City 1.
This game is not only still available, it's still PLAYABLE, on modern OSen and hardware, all the way up to and including *Android*[3].
This is one of the best games ever made. Most of this is because the story and dialog are clever, and timeless. The rest is because the mechanics are simple to learn, complex to master, AND ALSO TIMELESS. This is not a game like Deus Ex where the craptacular interface will make you wish for the sweet release of death so that your suffering might end - this is a game whose interface shows a LITTLE of it's age while remaining 95% seamless.
It is space opera.
It is classic video game.
It is playable even if you suck at video games.
It is one of the best games, period, ever made.
It was originally released in 1992.
It is free, and works right now on your hardware and your OS..
Right now, in 2011, you should play Star Control 2.[4]
[1]: Not "video games", games.
[2]: Among other things
[3]: The lesser, inferior, poor broken wretches who purchased iOS devices must wait JUST A BIT longer to experience the awesome, which should be a familiar experience for them by now.
[4]: Star Control 1 is interesting but not really required. There Has Not Ever Been A Star Control 3. Making an SC3 would be like making a sequel to Highlander - that would just be dumb.

torrain ( http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198025094771/ ) is trying to get enough people Friended to qualify for the chance at the "next 100 Steam Purchases are free" prize. Would you mind adding her?
PS: If you didn't know about this, check it out here. It is possible to qualify for 8/10 acheivements without purchasing anything. And anything you did in the past? Counts.
And if you win it, I have a wishlist. I'm just saying.
