New proposed abortion law: No abortion without written permission of the father.

If you don't know who the father is, you have to submit a list, and get them all checked until you find the right one, and then get his written permission.

Rape or incest? You need written proof of such from the police, instead of the father.

Grrr.. You know what? I don't think the "father" should have a say until men start being able to carry babies themselves. Men shouldn't be able to tell women what they can and can't do with their bodies. Maybe they should be notified before it happens, but I don't think they should be able to say "Uh, no, you can't abort my baby, bitch. Carry it and then raise it. Because it's my genes, and the law is on my side. Mwahahahha." *man goes off to spread more seed because mommas can't abort*

Hear fucking hear. I can see now all the cases where the boyfriend decides either that the embryo is his precious sacred genes and therefore couldn't possibly be aborted, or the bad-breakup scenario where said boyfriend refuses to sign the paperwork just to be nasty.

If men don't get to say "don't abort", why do women get to say "but you're paying for child support anyway!"? It seems extremely unequal the other way, these days.

Leaving aside the issue of force, it still takes two to tango without protection.

> Carry it and then raise it.

Hang on, is there actually legislation in the States that forces you to raise the kid once it's born? Can't you give it up for adoption?

(I mean, not that being able to give up a kid you were forced to carry to term makes the situation any better, but I think there is a difference between nine months of having your life interfered with and nineteen years of it.)

Aside from the very idea of this makes me froth at the mouth... I like (for given values of "like") this particular quote:

"I didn't bring it up to draw attention to myself or to be controversial. In most cases, when a child is born the father has financial responsibility for that child, so he should have a say."

Um... that has nothing to do with it, unless you're also going to turn around and say that a father-to-be can also *force* a woman to have an abortion if he doesn't want the kid.

*shudder*

My general rule of thumb is: if it's general insanity, it's probably Florida. If it's treating us women like the ignorant whores that we obviously are, or helping bring the law of the One True God to the land, it's Ohio.

I think I'm most surprised with the thought that the police are capable of "proving" rape/incest instead of judges or DA's. I'm second-most surprised that they insist on paternity tests before an abortion even though currently a fetus needs to be 12 weeks old before you can get a DNA sample from it, so it would probably be nigh-viable by the time all the paperwork was completed.

What doesn't surprise me is that a bill has been submitted to the Ohio legislature (and broadcast through the press) before anyone has had a chance to think it through. I can't believe that Ohio is the only state in the nation to have crackpot no-chance-of-passage legislation submitted; do they just have more eager journalists in their capital bureau?

What you actually need is a police report - proof that you reported it as rape/incest and the cops started a case on it.

Now we're getting to the point. Most doctors (in western Canada at least; I think most places) won't do an abortion past 12 weeks, and you'll be REALLY hard pressed to find one who'll do one past 16 weeks (unless the mother's life is in danger, etc.). Sounds like this law is a way to make sure that by the time the paternity results come back and all the paperwork is signed, the precious li'l lump will be safe and sound.

While I agree that it's not worth getting too worked up over this yet, it is worth paying attention and being angry about it because the fact that the idea for this law is out there means that someone thinks it's a really good idea. And that's half the reason I'm angry, even more so because this proposed law supports the flat-out patronization of women in suggesting they need to get a man's permission to own their own bodies (on a case by case basis, no less) or even worse, sneaky backhanded ways to take away their choice through tactics like this (http://theweaselking.livejournal.com/2485134.html?thread=8715150#t8715150).

But I would like to speak up as a father of an aborted child in that while I do accept the current societal standard of "the woman's choice"...I feel left out.

Sudden thought: what would happen if your significant other dies, and you cannot afford to go through pregnancy and raise a child on your own?

I mean, I'm guessing that forging his written permission would consitute abortion fraud, but the only other option (aside from other varieties of abortion fraud) would appear to be trying to post-humously report him for rape, which would be a miserable situation to be in on all levels.
